How to Make a Rug out of String

Making your own handcrafted rug from string, yarn, cording, clothesline or strips of recycled fabric is a simple and satisfying project. For the novice crafter, crochet is a popular method of transforming string or similar materials into fabric and rugs. Hand-crocheted rugs can be made into any size or shape. Because other shapes can present problems with rippling or curling, crocheting a square rug is a good project for beginners. Tools for this project are inexpensive and the simple stitches required to make the rug take only minutes to master. The amount of string needed for this project depends on the size of rug you plan to make.

Instructions

    • 1

Practice crocheting the chain stitch, slip stitch and single crochet stitches until you can proficiently perform each stitch.

    • 2

Tie a slip stitch in the end of the string, about three inches from the end. Crochet a foundation chain to the desired width of your finished rug. Make one more chain, then turn the chain so you can begin stitching back toward the slip knot. This will be your first actual row of the project. Do one single crochet stitch in each chain. When you reach the slip knot, make one chain stitch. Turn your work to begin crocheting in the opposite direction.

Continue crocheting and turning until your rug reaches the desired size. After forming the last stitch, trim the string so it is about six inches long. Weave the loose end into the back of the rug.
