Leave the floors bare. Large rugs make the floor appear smaller.
Paint the walls and ceilings white or in a light color to reflect as much light as possible in the room.
Minimize the amount of furniture in the room or place it against the walls. Scale the furniture to the room. The more floor space that is visible, the larger the floor will appear.
Select glass-topped tables to make more of the floor visible. Look for buffets or console furniture with legs instead of furniture that goes all the way to the floor. Cabinetry with legs exposes more of the floor.
Install sufficient lighting to brighten the room. Take advantage of natural light with sheer window coverings. A dark room with dark floors will appear small and cave-like.
