How to French Antique Glaze

French antique glazing is a technique you can use to revitalize nearly any furniture piece or cabinetry at a fraction of the cost of professional glazing. French glazed pieces lend a feeling of lightness to pieces, particularly those with heavy and ornate designs. Glazing provides a light sheen while accumulating in the crevices to accentuate the design.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the wood for painting by thoroughly cleaning the piece or cabinetry with cleaner. Wipe it completely clean and allow it to thoroughly dry.

    • 2

Mix one measure of chalk paint to three parts glaze in the bowl.

    • 3

Mix well using a paint stick. The chalk paint and glaze must be thoroughly blended before you use the mixture.

    • 4

Dip your rag into the mixture, letting the excess drip off before applying to your piece. Work with a small amount of mixture at a time, covering a small area at a time.

    • 5

Wipe the glaze-and-paint mixture onto the furniture or cabinet in a straight, up-and-down motion, applying pressure so that it gets worked into the grain of the wood.

    • 6

Use a clean rag to wipe away excess paint and glaze from each section quickly.
