How to Apply Flat Black Spray Paint & Then Lacquer to Wood Furniture

Whether refurbishing an old piece of furniture or building your own, applying a lacquer finish will protect the surface, too. Instructions

    • 1

Set up a work space in an open area with proper ventilation. Working in the garage with the door open or outdoors in a covered space will allow fumes to evaporate. Place the piece you are refurbishing on a tarp or newspaper in your work space.

    • 2

Strip any old finishes off the furniture. The exact process will depend on the finish you need to remove. In most cases, this will mean applying a paint stripper to the wood. Follow the directions on the stripping product. Sand the wood once stripping is complete to make the surface smooth.

    • 3

Hold the can of black matte spray paint six inches away from the surface of the wood. Press the spray nozzle as you move the can over the piece to cover it in paint. If the paint is running, pull the can back an inch while spraying. Cover the entire piece with the black paint and allow it to dry thoroughly. Follow the directions on the can for proper drying times.

    • 4

Spray on the lacquer using the same technique. Hold the can at least six inches away from the wood. Move quickly over the surface to help prevent running. Allow the lacquer to dry fully, then apply a second coat. Let the second coat dry.

    • 5

Sand any drips in the lacquer with fine-grit sandpaper. Wipe down the lacquered surface with a rag to remove dust, then apply a third coat and allow it to dry.

    • 6

Rub paste wax onto the piece and buff it with a soft cloth after the third coat of lacquer dries. Follow the instructions on the wax for proper application.
