## Making a Straightjacket Costume

Materials:

* White canvas fabric (1 yard)

* Black bias tape (2 yards)

* Buttons (20)

* Thread

* Scissors

* Measuring tape

* Seam ripper

* Iron

* Sewing machine

Instructions:

1.) Measure the person who will be wearing the straightjacket. You will need to know their chest measurement, waist measurement, and arm length.

2.) Cut out two pieces of fabric for the front of the straightjacket and two pieces for the back. The pieces for the front should be the chest measurement plus 2 inches for seam allowances. The pieces for the back should be the chest measurement plus 6 inches for seam allowances. The length of the pieces should be the arm length plus 2 inches for seam allowances.

3.) Sew the pieces together, right sides together, with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Leave the top open for the neckline and the bottom open for the arms.

4.) Turn the straightjacket right side out and press.

5.) Fold the top edge of the straightjacket down 1 inch and press. Fold it down again 1 inch and press. Stitch in place.

6.) Fold the bottom edge of the straightjacket down 1 inch and press. Fold it down again 2 inches and press. Stitch in place.

7.) Mark lines 1 inch apart on the front of the straightjacket. These will be the buttonholes.

8.) Use a seam ripper to make holes at the marks on the front of the straightjacket.

9.) Sew buttons onto the front of the straightjacket at the buttonholes.

10.) Cut two pieces of bias tape 2 inches wide and the length of the sleeves.

11.) Fold the bias tape in half lengthwise and press.

12.) Sew the bias tape around the edges of the sleeves, right sides together, with a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

13.) Turn the sleeves right side out and press.

14.) Sew the sleeves into the armholes of the straightjacket, right sides together, with a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

15.) Enjoy your new straightjacket!
