Choose a design for the contact paper. This material comes in a variety of colors and designs, including faux wood stain patterns.
Measure the top of the glass desk and cut out the contact paper to fit. Cut out an extra inch in the length and width of the paper to make it easy to work with.
Stick the contact paper to the desktop. Begin at the top left corner and slowly work your way down and to the right.
Smooth the contact paper as you go with the plastic wallpaper smoother to help prevent air bubbles and creases.
Flatten the contact paper with the wallpaper smoother and your hands after you cover the entire area. Drag the straight-edge smoother gently over the paper and follow the action with your hands to ensure the surface is flat.
Cut the contact paper along each edge with the utility knife. The contact paper should be flush with the edges of the desk.
Cut out an 18-by-22-inch piece of vinyl upholstery.
Place the upholstery with the pattern facing down. Set the clayboard or art board, which you can find pre-cut at art supply or hobby stores, in the center of the fabric.
Stretch the upholstery over the edges of the board beginning at the top left corner and working your way over. Attach the upholstery with the vinyl adhesive.
Turn the board over after you adhere the fabric around the entire board. Smooth it out with your hands.
