How to Fasten Molding to Plaster Walls

Molding gives a room a finished look while drawing attention to a ceiling’s architectural details. Plaster is composed of lime, an aggregate such as sand or cement and a bonding agent that is spread over concrete, drywall or a wooden base. The plaster itself is too weak to support the molding, so the studs underneath must be located to provide a more substantial base. Prepare and cut the molding before it is attached to create a clean, finished look.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the walls to determine the amount of molding required. Write down this figure and purchase the molding accordingly.

    • 2

Paint or treat the mold with a polyurethane sealant prior to cutting or hanging. Apply a semi-gloss paint to the molding and allow it to dry completely before continuing.

    • 3

Cut the molding according to the measurements taken in Step 1. Use a skill saw to create straight cuts and a miter saw to cut a 45-degree angle on the molding’s corner pieces.

    • 4

Hold the molding against the wall where it will be hung. Run a stud finder over the wall to locate the studs. Once the studs are located, attach the molding to the plaster with two, 3-inch steel nails. Drive one nail into the wall and the other into the ceiling joist.

Continue to attach the molding until the job is complete. Examine the molding for any gaps between it and the wall. Fill the gaps with silicone caulk to create a seamless finished appearance. Wipe away any excess caulk with a damp cloth.
