How to Make a Mosaic in Concrete

A colorful, intricate mosaic is a true work of art, evoking an old-world feel reminiscent of ancient Rome. While there are a number of ways to create a mosaic, using concrete allows you to press the tiles directly into the base material, eliminating the need for grout. Spread the concrete over any number of surfaces or put it into a mold to create a mosaic stepping stone for the garden.

Instructions

    • 1

Do a test layout of your mosaic tiles on a flat surface. Cut any tiles to adjust their shape by using tile nippers.

    • 2

Mix up a batch of mosaic concrete by combining one part cement with two parts fine sand. Stir the cement and sand together until combined. Add water gradually until the mixture takes on a thick consistency similar to peanut butter.

    • 3

Let the mixture sit for 10 minutes, then use a trowel to spread a layer of the concrete onto the surface where you’re creating the mosaic. Make the layer at least a half-inch thicker than your mosaic tiles.

Press your mosaic tiles directly into the concrete until the sides are covered but the top is left exposed. Push each tile into place in the design from your test layout. Let the concrete cure and dry for at least one week before handling.
