Difference Between Satin & High-Gloss Spar Varnish

Spar varnish is a specially formulated type of varnish often used to finish boats or outdoor furniture made of wood. Durable, water-resistant and immune to UV light, spar varnish is also flexible, which means it will expand and retract with the wood in response to temperature extremes. "Satin" and "high-gloss" are terms that refer to the appearance of the finish after it is applied to the wood.
  1. Satin Spar Varnish

    • Satin spar varnish is a clear, protective finishing varnish. It gives wood a more subtle appearance than other types of spar varnishes. Satin varnish is subdued and not shiny. It gives a slight, rich sheen to wood and may slightly darken the color of wood.

Pros and Cons of Satin Spar Varnish

    • The muted finish of satin spar varnish means that scratches, nicks and dings do not stand out. This makes it a good choice for everyday furniture that will be used often or for children's furniture. On the other hand, it is not as showy as its glossier counterpart, so if you are looking to make your wooden piece stand out, you may choose to use finish it with high-gloss varnish.

    High-Gloss Spar Varnish

    • High gloss spar varnish is just what it sounds like -- it results in a highly glossy shine. This is the shiniest finish available in spar varnish, and it can look almost reflective if the surface of the wood is smooth.

Pros and Cons of High-Gloss Spar Varnish

    • Theappearance of high-gloss spar varnish ensures that your wooden furniture, art or boat will be a showstopper. If you want to draw attention to the object you are varnishing, your best bet is to finish it with high-gloss spar varnish. On the other hand, the high shine that is a result of this varnish may be almost too bright when the sun hits it, so consider where and how you will be using the piece before choosing to seal it with a high-gloss finish. In addition, scratches and other damage shows up much more clearly on wood that has been sealed with high-gloss varnish.
