How to Soften Polyester

Method 1: Hair Conditioner

Step 1: Wash the polyester item.

Before you can soften it, you need to make sure that the polyester item is clean. Wash it according to the care instructions on the label.

Step 2: Add hair conditioner to the rinse cycle.

Fill a cup to the halfway mark with a moisturizing hair conditioner.

Once the washing machine is full of water, add it during the rinse cycle. If your machine doesn't have a separate dispenser, just add it directly to the drum when you normally add your fabric softener.

Step 3: Dry the item on low heat.

Take it out once it's done and feel it. Is it still not as soft as you would like? If not, just put the item back in the dryer and continue running it until it's just about dry to the touch.

Method 2: White Vinegar

Step 1: Put the polyester item in the washer with white vinegar.

Fill the machine with cool water and set it to the gentle cycle. Add 2 cups of white vinegar for each gallon of water. Make sure the item is completely submerged in the vinegar solution.

Step 2: Let it sit for 30 minutes.

Let it sit for the full 30 minutes to give the acetic acid time to penetrate and soften the fibers. If the item is new and has a lot of sizing on it, you can let it soak for up to 45 minutes.

Step 3: Run it through the rinse cycle.

Once it has soaked, run it through the rinse cycle. Don't add any detergent or fabric softener.

Step 4: Dry the item.

Take the item out of the washer and place it in the dryer. It's best to dry the item on the low or no-heat setting to avoid damaging it.
