- Old sweater (preferably a wool or wool-blend sweater)
- Scissors
- Sewing needle and thread
- Fabric marker
- Cutting mat
- Rotary cutter (optional)
1. Prepare the sweater: Wash and dry the sweater inside out to make sure it is clean and shrink-free. Lay it flat on a cutting mat or countertop.
2. Cut out rectangles: Cut the sweater sleeves and body into large rectangles. The size of the rectangles will depend on the size of your legs. For an average-sized adult, each rectangle should measure approximately 14 inches wide by 24 inches long.
3. Fold the rectangles: Fold each rectangle in half lengthwise, right sides together.
4. Mark and cut the gusset: Draw a 3-inch wide by 4-inch long gusset on one of the folded rectangles, centered on the fold. Cut out the gusset, making sure not to cut through the fold line.
5. Stitch: Sew 1/4 inch around the gusset opening using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Backstitch at the beginning and end of the stitching.
6. Turn right side out: Carefully turn the gusset right side out. Use your finger or a point turner to gently push out the corners. Press flat.
7. Join the stockings: Sew together the two rectangles along one of the short sides, right sides together. Leave the other short side open. Repeat with the other two rectangles.
8. Finish the seams: Turn the stockings right side out and press. You can use a seam ripper to carefully remove any excess fabric from the seam allowances.
9. Add an optional cuff: If desired, you can add a cuff to the top of the stockings. To make a cuff, cut two rectangles 3 inches wide by the width of the stocking (plus 2 inches for overlap). Fold each rectangle in half lengthwise, right sides together, and sew along one of the short sides. Turn right side out and press. Sew the cuff to the top of the stockings, encasing the raw edge.
10. Enjoy your new stockings! Cozy up with your handmade stockings this winter.
