- 3/4 inch plywood (cut to desired countertop dimensions)
- Two metal gate hinges
- 2x4s (cut to length for support)
- Wood screws
- Sandpaper
- Stain or paint (optional)
Step 1: Prepare the Plywood
Start by sanding the plywood to smoothen any rough edges. If desired, you can apply stain or paint to match your kitchen cabinets or décor. Let it dry completely before moving on.
Step 2: Assemble the Support Frame
Place the 2x4s together to form a rectangular or square frame, depending on the shape of your countertop. Secure the 2x4s together with wood screws. Make sure the frame is sturdy and strong enough to support the hinged countertop.
Step 3: Attach Hinges
Place one of the metal gate hinges on the edge of the plywood, aligning the holes with the edge of the wood. Use wood screws to attach the hinge to the plywood. Repeat this step for the other hinge on the opposite edge.
Step 4: Attach Hinged Countertop to the Frame
Position the hinged countertop on the support frame, aligning the hinges with the corresponding brackets on the frame. Use wood screws to secure the hinges to the frame.
Step 5: Finishing Touches
Use sandpaper to smooth any rough edges or bumps on the countertop and support frame. This will also help ensure that the edges are safe to touch.
Your hinged countertop is now ready to use. You can open and close it for different purposes in your kitchen or workspace, providing additional space when needed.
