Painting Upholstered Furniture Fabric

Prepare a well-ventilated area for applying the spray paint. Lay a drop cloth or newspapers on the floor. Move any nearby items that may be damaged by overspray. If the upholstered piece has removable cushions, remove them. Mask areas of the furniture that you don't plan to paint with newspaper and masking tape.

Shake the paint can. Apply the spray paint according to the manufacturer's directions. Typically, you should hold the can vertically 8 to 12 inches from the fabric surface. Paint folds and pleats first. Apply the paint in smooth, even, horizontal passes.

Move the can from side to side and begin spraying just before you approach the edge of the piece to prevent paint buildup at the edges. Do not saturate the fabric with paint. Multiple coats may be needed for an even finish. Apply paint to cushions. Allow the paint to dry according to the manufacturer's directions before turning the cushions to cover unpainted edges.

Check to see that all parts of the furniture piece are covered evenly. Once you are satisfied with the paint coverage, remove the masking materials. Allow the paint to thoroughly dry before moving or using the furniture piece. Some paint manufacturers recommend up to 72 hours of drying and curing time.
