What Colors to Use for Curtains to Make a Room Bigger?

Colors affect the look and feel of a room. One of the effects of color is its ability to make a room appear larger and more spacious, or more intimate and cozier. Not only can the color of your bedding and walls make a room appear bigger, but the color of your curtains can, as well.
  1. Neutral Colors

    • Neutral colors include white, black and gray. Use light neutral colors for your bedding because their reflectiveness to light can help to make a room look bigger. Choose to cover your windows with curtains that are white, off-white, beige or cream. Gray window treatments also can make a room appear larger, as long as it's a lighter shade of gray rather than a darker one.

    Pastels

    • Choose pastels, or lighter, pale versions of colors for your curtains to make your room look bigger. Pastels, which have the same effect as light, neutral colors in creating the illusion of more space, are available in an array of colors. All primary and secondary colors can be used to create pastels in colors such as blue, green, orange, pink and yellow.

    Cool Colors

    • Cool colors, such as blue, green, purple and violet, are other color options for your curtains to make your room appear larger. Cool colors make a space appear to recede into the background. In addition to making your room appear larger, cool colors have a calming effect and create a soothing impression in a room that can help you feel more relaxed and restful.

    Combination of Colors

    • You don't have to use a solid color for your curtains to make your room look bigger. You can use curtains that are printed with neutral, pastel and cool colors, as well. For example, because neutral colors match with most colors, you can use striped or printed curtains with neutral and pastel colors or neutral and cool colors. Likewise, you can select striped or printed curtains in pastel colors combined with cool colors.
