Determine which color will be the accent color and which will be the main color. For example, use brown as the dominate color and red the accents, or vice versa.
Choose paint and furniture colors in different hues of the main color. In a brown room, select two other shades to compliment the decor. Paint the walls a cream or taupe and incorporate a chocolate brown sofa. Create an impact with a single red wall if that is your main color.
Layer in additional furniture pieces. Make a statement with a red chair or chaise. Limit furniture colors to two or three plus an accent. Select one upholstered piece with a pattern that has brown and red in it.
Hang at least one piece of art that has red and brown in it to reinforce the design. Anchor the seating arrangement with a rug that also includes the colors in the room.
Layer in accessories in the accent color. Place a vase of flowers on a table and place decorative pillows on seating. Hang additional artwork or photos. Place plants, potted in a brown pot by a window.
