- Fabric: 1 to 3 yards (depending on the length of the cape you want)
- Medium-weight woven fabric like cotton or polyester
- Avoid stretchy or lightweight fabrics like jersey, knit, or chiffon
- Hood: 1 fat quarter of fabric (optional, for capes with a hood)
- Thread
- Sewing machine
- Rotary cutter and cutting mat (optional)
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Iron
1. Prepare the fabric. Wash, dry, and iron the fabric. If you're using a directional print, make sure the pattern is running the way you want it to on the cape.
2. Cut out the cape pieces. You will need two rectangular pieces of fabric, each measuring the desired length of the cape by the desired width. If you're making a hooded cape, you will also need to cut out a piece for the hood. The hood piece should measure the length of your head circumference, by the height you want the hood to be.
3. Sew the cape together. With right sides together, sew the two rectangular pieces of fabric together along one long edge. Turn the cape right side out and press flat.
4. Add the hood (optional). If you're making a hooded cape, fold the hood piece in half lengthwise, with right sides together. Sew along the long edge, using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Turn the hood right side out and press flat.
5. Attach the hood to the cape. Pin the hood to the neckline of the cape, matching the center of the hood with the center of the neckline. Sew the hood in place, using a 1/4-inch seam allowance.
6. Hem the cape. Fold the bottom edge of the cape up by 1/2 inch and press. Fold it up again by 1/2 inch and press. Stitch the hem in place.
7. Add any desired trim. You can add trim to the edges of the cape, the hood, or both. Common trim options include rickrack, lace, ribbon, or bias tape.
8. Enjoy your new cape! Your hooded cape is now complete and ready to wear for Halloween or any other special occasion.
- For a more dramatic effect, use a heavyweight fabric like wool or velvet.
- Add a lining to your cape for extra warmth and durability.
- Embellish your cape with appliques, embroidery, or other decorations to make it unique.
- If you don't have a sewing machine, you can hand-sew the cape together. Just be sure to use a strong thread and a small needle.
- If you're making a cape for a child, be sure to measure their height and head circumference carefully before cutting out the fabric pieces.
- You can also use this tutorial to make a vampire cloak or a witch's robe by simply changing the fabric and trim.
