Gather your materials:
- Crock-pot with a removable liner
- Wax (soy, beeswax, or paraffin)
- Candle wicks
- Fragrance oil or essential oil (optional)
- Metal or glass measuring cup
- Wooden spoon
- Wax thermometer
- Containers for your candles
- Wick centering device (such as a popsicle stick or bamboo skewer)
- Newspaper or wax paper to protect your workspace
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Crock-Pot:
- Place a clean, removable liner inside the crock-pot. This will make cleanup easier and prevent the wax from sticking directly to the pot.
- Place the crock-pot on a sturdy, heat-resistant surface, preferably in an area where there is good ventilation.
2. Measure the Wax:
- Measure the amount of wax you need based on the size and number of candles you plan to make. Use the manufacturer's instructions for your specific wax type to determine the correct proportions.
3. Melt the Wax:
- Place the measured wax into the metal or glass measuring cup. Do not fill it more than halfway, as the wax will expand as it melts.
- Place the measuring cup inside the crock-pot. Turn the crock-pot on and set it to "Low." Stir occasionally with a wooden spoon to help the wax melt evenly.
- Continue melting the wax until it reaches a temperature between 185°F and 200°F. Use a wax thermometer to monitor the temperature accurately.
4. Add Fragrance Oil (Optional):
- If you wish to add fragrance or essential oil to your candles, mix a small amount into the melted wax, about 1/2 ounce of oil per pound of wax. Stir well until the oil is evenly distributed. Be careful not to add too much oil, as it can affect the burning quality of the candle.
5. Prepare your Candle Containers:
- While the wax is melting, prepare your candle containers by placing a wick centering device in the middle of each container. Secure the wick with a hot glue gun or adhesive putty to keep it centred during pouring.
6. Pour the Wax into Containers:
- Once the wax has melted and reached the desired temperature, carefully remove the measuring cup from the crock-pot and place it on a heat-resistant surface.
- Slowly and steadily pour the melted wax into your prepared candle containers. Make sure to leave a small gap between the top of the wax and the rim of the container to allow for expansion while cooling.
7. Cooling and Setting:
- Let the candles cool completely and undisturbed at room temperature for several hours. This will allow the wax to solidify and achieve a smooth, even surface.
8. Trim the Wicks:
- Once the candles have cooled, trim the wicks to about 1/4 inch in length. This will help to ensure an even and clean burn.
Your homemade candles are now ready to be enjoyed!
Remember to always follow safety precautions when working with hot wax and follow the manufacturer's instructions for your specific wax type.
