What Is Thinsulate Insulation?

Thinsulate insulation is not your ordinary insulation; 3M manufactures products, such as boots, pants, jackets, gloves and hats, with Thinsulate Insulation. The microfibers that Thinsulate is constructed from traps air molecules between you and the cold air outside. Thinsulate traps the cold air molecules inside a smaller space, allowing for better insulation.
  1. Lightweight

    • Because Thinsulate is lightweight, manufacturers utilize it in many products, including footwear for work, hunting and hiking, as well as casual shoes. The microfibers in the insulation are lightweight. This keeps the insulation from weighing shoes down but keeps your feet warm at the same time. Thinsulate is available in different weights, depending on the insulation required. The weights start at 200 grams for less insulation and continue up to 1,000 grams for extremely cold conditions.

    Breathable

    • Thinsulate is breathable because the fibers that make up the insulation are very small. Because it is so breathable, Thinsulate is ideal to insulate items such as bedding, coats, hats and gloves. Thinsulate can be worn while performing strenuous outdoor activities and wicks away perspiration, potentially preventing hypothermia due to the chilling effects of sweat. The material keeps you insulated from the cold while keeping the sweat away from your skin at the same time.

    Moisture-resistant

    • Thinsulate fibers absorb less than 1 percent of their weight when submerged in water. Because it only absorbs a minimal amount of water, Thinsulate is ideal for footwear worn in wet conditions. Because Thinsulate is moisture-resistant, you can enjoy winter activities, such as hunting and skiing, without worrying about your feet getting cold.

    Machine Washable and Dry Cleanable

    • Some natural and man-made insulation is not washable; however, Thinsulate is both machine washable and dry cleanable. The microfibers are not altered by either cleaning processes. Items that are washable include bedding, hats, gloves and coats.
