How to Make a Crafter's Desk

Most crafters appreciate having a dedicated workspace for sewing, jewelrymaking, painting or other hobbies. You can eliminate the need to pack away craft supplies after each project by creating a crafter's desk. Purchased desks can be expensive. Recycled materials can be repurposed for a fraction of the cost. You can assemble an efficient craft desk with just a few supplies and quickly begin crafting.

Instructions

    • 1

Find or purchase a door that's flat. One with raised panels won't work. Sand the door if necessary. Use the paintbrush to paint one side of the door with two coats of semi-gloss, washable paint. Allow the paint to dry completely.

    • 2

Stack the cinder blocks against a wall. Cinder blocks are 8 inches high, so you will need about four on each side. Lay the door, painted side up, across the cinder blocks to test for stability and height. Adjust, if necessary.

    • 3

Glue a yard stick along one long edge of the door for measuring fabric, ribbon and other craft materials. Add small screws on both ends of the yard stick. You can also use a fabric tape measure or paint measurements directly on the door, if desired.

Secure the plastic storage bins to one short end of the door with screws. Screw the paper towel holder to the other short end of the door. Use the holder for paper towels for easy craft clean up. Empty paper towel tubes can be left on the holder to hold ribbon rolls and other craft supplies.

Arrange the surface of the desk as desired. Make or purchase pencil holders, paint brush canisters and other desk accessories.
