How to Apply Tung Oil

According to Bob Vila, tung oil is the first choice of people who enjoy finishing wood. This oil, which comes from the nut of the tung-oil tree (Aleurites fordii), deeply penetrates wood and bonds with fibers under the surface, becoming part of it. Tung oil is an excellent sealant and will protect wood finishes from stains and spills if used correctly. Novice wood refinishers often use tung oil because it's virtually mistake-proof and because it cleans up easily.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the surface with a clean, damp cloth to remove any dust or debris. Let the surface air dry completely.

    • 2

Pour a tablespoon of tung oil into the palm of your hand. Brush your hand lightly over the surface of the wood to distribute a thin layer of oil evenly over the entire surface.

    • 3

Rub the oil into the surface with your palm, working with the grain. The warmth of your hand will heat the oil and the wood, allowing it to penetrate deeply. Let it dry overnight.

    • 4

Lightly sand the surface with a piece of grade 000 steel wool. Wipe with a damp cloth to remove debris. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 six times or more to achieve a deep, lustrous finish.

    • 5

Clean tung oil from your hands with a little splash of white vinegar and warm water, or simply wipe them on a clean rag and enjoy the moisturizing effects of the oil.
