How to Use Wood Brightener After Chlorine Bleach

Whether you're trying to get your fence as blemish-free as possible before staining it, or you're just performing some routine maintenance on your deck, wood brightener is a very useful chemical product to have in your repertoire. Typically, a wood brightener's formula's active ingredient is oxalic acid, which can remove stains from rust or old leaves, and also act as a primer for any wood stain that you might want to apply, leaving the wood ready to best absorb paint.

Instructions

    • 1

Let the wood sit and dry after cleaning it with chlorine bleach. You don't want any chemicals in the wood brightener to react with those in the bleach, so rinse it well.

    • 2

Fill your garden sprayer with the wood brightening solution.

    • 3

Spray an even coat of wood brightener over your wood.

    • 4

Let the brightener sit and react for 15 to 20 minutes. You do not need to scrub the wood. There may be additional directions for this step included with your wood brightener.

    • 5

      Rinse off the wood brightener.

    • 6

Before painting or staining the freshly-brightened wood, you will need to let it dry thoroughly, until its moisture is below 18 percent. This can take up to 3 days in warm, sunny weather.
