Place the table in a well-ventilated work area. Some of the chemicals involved in refinishing can be dangerous when inhaled.
Brush the finish remover over the table with the disposable brush. This is a faster and more effective method than sanding the old finish off, and does risk damaging the table. Use only wash-away or no-cleanup finish removers.
File the pointy corners off of the putty knife. This will keep it from damaging the table.
Scrape the finish and finish remover off of the table with the putty knife, once the finish is soft. Do not allow the finish to dry. Scrape only along the grain.
Scrub the table with medium-fine steel wool to remove all the finish and remover residue.
Sand the table with a finishing sander. Use 220 grit sandpaper. Sand with the grain.
Fill small cracks in the wood with grain filler, using the putty knife. Allow it to dry per the manufacturer's instructions.
Stain the table with a stain of your choice. Use a clean brush. Let the stain dry for 24 hours.
Apply a coat of semi-gloss polyurethane finish. Let it dry, then sand the table with the 220 grit paper. Apply two more coats of finish, sanding after each.
