How to Repair Vinyl Patio Furniture

Over time, your vinyl patio furniture may be broken, stained or faded by exposure to the sun. Instead of replacing the entire piece of furniture, purchase a vinyl repair kit that includes replacement straps and installation hardware. If you cannot find a replacement kit that matches the color of your patio furniture, cover the entire piece with a fresh coat of paint.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the screws that hold the broken vinyl straps onto the furniture. If your furniture has rivets instead of screws, pry them off with the end of a flathead screwdriver. Remove and discard the broken straps.

    • 2

Use a flexible tape measure to determine the length of your replacement straps. Wrap the tape around the metal frame exactly as you would with the vinyl strap.

    • 3

Multiply your measurement by .85 to allow for the vinyl's ability to expand when exposed to heat. Add 1 inch to your measurement to leave room for the screws or rivets that will hold the strap onto the furniture's support frame. Cut a strip of vinyl according to your measurement.

    • 4

Use an electric drill to make screw holes at each end of the strap. Look at the metal support frame to determine how many holes you need to drill for each strap. Some frames may have two screws that secure each strap, while others have three.

    • 5

Place the new vinyl strap into a pot of hot water so that it will expand. Let it sit for five to 10 minutes.

    • 6

Wear heat-resistant gloves to protect your hands while you work with the hot vinyl. Remove the strap from the hot water and insert it into the slot in the furniture's support frame before it cools down. Secure one end of the strap with screws or rivets. Weave the other end around the support frame to replace the damaged strap and secure it with screws or rivets.

    • 7

Repeat the previous steps as needed to replace all of the damaged vinyl straps and repair your patio furniture.

    • 8

Apply a coat of paint to cover up your replacement job if needed. Allow the furniture to dry overnight before using it or exposing it to water or extreme heat.
