Homemade Rolling Ladders

A rolling ladder is a necessary tool for anyone interested in do-it-yourself projects or projects around the house. Casters on the bottom of the ladder move it effortlessly across different spaces. Using locking casters lets you lock the ladder into place, which stops it from moving when you do a specific job. You can make your own homemade rolling ladder from a few pieces of wood and rolling casters, which are available from most home improvement stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Place two 12-foot 2-by-4-inch wood boards side-by-side with the bottom and top edges lined up. Make sure that the pieces are exactly the same size.

    • 2

Place a locking caster on the bottom left corner of one wood piece. The caster contains a flat metal piece on top that sits flush with the wood. Drill a 1-inch hole through each hole in the metal and into the wood. Screw a 2-inch wood screw through each hole. Attach a second caster to the right corner and repeat this step, attaching two casters to the other length of wood.

    • 3

Set the two 2-by-4 wood boards next to each other and arrange 18 2-by-3-inch wood boards in the middle. The longer boards act as the sides of the ladder, while the shorter pieces serve as the rungs. One rung should sit flush with the top, one flush with the bottom and the rest evenly distributed. Mark the location of each piece on the sides.

    • 4

Apply wood glue to the sides of each side piece. Line the rungs up between the longer pieces and clamp overnight. Let the glue dry before you remove the clamps.

    • 5

Place an L-bracket on the bottom left corner of the first rung. Arrange the bracket so that it sits flush with the bottom of the rung and the left side piece. Attach the bracket to both pieces of wood with 2-1/2-inch decking screws. Attach a second L-bracket to the bottom right corner of the rung. Add two L-brackets to each rung, screwing the bracket into the rung and the side of the ladder. The brackets let the ladder support the rungs and your body weight.
