How to Resize a Too-Small Shirt Fit

Resizing a shirt that is too small can be a challenging task, but following the steps below can help achieve a more comfortable and flattering fit.

Remember that altering a shirt's structure can impact the way it looks and possibly affect the overall design of the garment. If unsure about altering a particular shirt or if it is a valuable item, it's best to consult a professional tailor or seamstress.

1. Assess the Shirt:

- Examine the shirt carefully, paying attention to the seams, darts, and any details that might affect the alteration process.

- Check for enough seam allowance to let out the shirt. Seam allowance is the extra fabric along the seams that can be used for adjustments.

- Determine if the shirt's design allows for resizing without compromising the style or functionality.

2. Prepare the Shirt:

- Wash and iron the shirt to ensure working with a clean and flat fabric.

3. Locate Seam Allowances:

- Inside the shirt, identify the seam allowances on the side seams and underarm area. These are the areas where the fabric can be let out.

4. Unstitch the Seams:

- Carefully unpick or unstitch the side seams and underarm seams as far as needed to let out the shirt. Remember to leave about half an inch of seam allowance for sewing the seams back together.

5. Redistribute the Fabric:

- Evenly distribute the added fabric from the seam allowance to the front and back of the shirt. Pin the shirt along the sides and underarms to see how it fits and ensure a balanced distribution.

6. Sew the Seams:

- Once satisfied with the new fit, sew the side seams and underarm seams carefully, either by hand or using a sewing machine.

7. Finish the Seams:

- Press the seams open and flat. For a more polished finish, you can serge or zig-zag stitch the seam edges to prevent fraying.

8. Try On:

- Try on the shirt to ensure the desired fit is achieved.

9. Adjust if Needed:

-If necessary, make any minor adjustments or alterations to the shirt to perfect the fit.

Remember, if the shirt is significantly too small or the fabric has little to no seam allowance, it may not be possible to resize successfully. In such cases, it's best to look for an alternative solution, such as finding a larger shirt or seeking professional alterations.
