How to Tighten Bed Springs

Squeaky beds can be so annoying and can wreak havoc on your much needed sleep time. Just when you drift off to sleep, you awaken to an awful squeak because your spouse rolled over. This does not mean that you have to rush out and buy a new bed, at least not before you try a few minor things yourself to quiet down the squeaks. Usually, fixing the squeaks is a very easy task and you can then enjoy your slumber once again.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the headboard and footboard if present by unscrewing any bolts, nuts or screws.

    • 2

Take the bed apart by removing the mattress and the box spring.

    • 3

Remove the fabric that is under the box spring so that you can get a look underneath. Usually, staples or small nails hold this fabric in place. Gently lift them up so that you can replace the fabric when you are done. It is not mandatory to replace the fabric.

    • 4

Examine the springs in the box spring. Tighten any loose screws or bolts and the connectors that are holding the springs in place.

    • 5

Add plastic washers to all of the screws and bolts.

    • 6

Spray some cooking spray or lubricating spray onto the springs generously.

    • 7

Flip the mattress over both horizontally and vertically.

    • 8

Reassemble the bed by making sure that the mattress is centered. Off-centered mattresses and box springs can cause unwanted squeaks.
