How to Compare Foam Mattress Toppers

Mattress toppers add a comfortable buffer between you and your mattress. Though they will not help a mattress with a worn-out support system, they do add comfort to a firm mattress, which can help extend its life. Choosing a mattress topper can be daunting because there are many styles and types. Comparing materials, quality, costs and durability will help you determine what topper is right for you.

The most common types of foam mattress toppers are natural latex, synthetic latex and memory. Natural latex is the most expensive, but it also is “green,” naturally hypoallergenic and anti-bacterial. Synthetic latex offers the support and comfort of natural latex, but none of natural latex’s additional benefits. Memory foam is the most common choice and an option that you can sink into, while still getting the support you need.

Select the density of your topper if you have chosen to buy a memory foam type. Foam density is measured in pounds. High-density foam is more durable than low-density, so seek the highest density you can afford. Three- and four-pound foams are in the medium-density range and can offer quality and durability at a fair price.

Determine your preference when it comes to a topper's firmness. A latex foam topper's firmness is determined by the method used to create the latex: the Dunlop method creates firmer latex, while the Talalay method creates more comfortable, but less supportive latex. If you have chosen a memory foam topper, its firmness is indicated with a measurement called ILD. The firmness of memory foam varies based on temperature, but an ILD from 10 to 14 should be comfortable.

Decide what thickness you need. Mattress toppers range from 1 inch to more than 5 inches thick, though the most common range is 2 to 3 inches. A thick topper offers more comfort, but it also will cost more. Thin toppers do not block as much of your mattress’s support, and they can be better for people who suffer back problems.
