Measuring the thickness of your mattress is not as simple as it may seem. If you just take a ruler or measuring tape and try to measure, you will most likely lean or push on the mattress and skew the reading. To avoid this, you need two pieces of cardboard and a ruler. Lay one piece of cardboard between the mattress and box spring and the other on top of the mattress. Leave a little of the cardboard sticking out. Measure between the cardboard pieces. This process is known as the gusset or depth measurement. If you have a pillow top-style mattress, measure it in three locations to account for the settlement of the padding.
It is much easier to measure the length of your mattress. All you need to do is use a tape measure to measure from one end to the other. You may find it easier to take this measurement with a partner, each of you standing on one end of the mattress. If working by yourself, stand at one end and let out enough of the tape to reach across the mattress. Drop the hooked end of the tape over the edge of the mattress and then check the measurement on your end.
Width is probably the easiest measurement to complete. Simply use the tape to measure the width of the mattress. If these measurements are accurate, you can easily order fitted sheets or purchase a new mattress with the same specifications.
If you are in the market for a new mattress, measurements are not the only important factor to consider. When you find a mattress that fits, lie on it to see if it is comfortable and provides the support you need. A supportive mattress will hold your body in the same posture that you have when standing. A pillowtop mattress may add comfort, but it may not add support, and will almost certainly add cost to the transaction. Consider the final cost when considering pillowtops or other accessories.
