What Can You Put Between the Pillow Top & Mattress for Firmness?

If you are having trouble sleeping at night, it might be because your bed is too soft. To be comfortable, you might need to take measures to make the bed a bit more firm. For a mattress that has a removable pillow top piece, you can easily increase the firmness of the bed.
  1. Removable Top

    • If your pillow top makes the mattress too soft, try removing the pillow top portion for firmness. By taking it off completely, you are removing the plush feature from the mattress. If the mattress itself is firm, this might be enough of a change to meet your needs. Try sleeping on it for one night to determine whether it will work. If not, you can continue troubleshooting.

    Standard Mattress Pad

    • A standard mattress pad can be placed over your mattress, between it and the pillow top. Doing this can give the mattress a little extra firmness by decreasing its responsiveness. However, with the plush pillow top above it, the mattress will still be soft.

    Bed Board

    • You can also make the mattress firmer by placing a bed board under it. This is generally made of wood and can be purchased at medical supply stores. As an alternative, try a piece of plywood.

    Thick Mattress Firming Pad

    • A thick mattress pad can also be added between the mattress and pillow top for increased firmness. These differ from a standard mattress pad because they are generally made of thicker material, such as quilted mattress pads.

    Temperature

    • The temperature of your bedroom plays a part in the firmness of the mattress. Try adjusting your thermostat so it is cooler in the room. This may firm up the mattress just enough to help you get a better night’s sleep.
