How to Make a Back Rest Pillow

Making a back rest pillow is a simple and rewarding DIY project that can add comfort and support to your home seating. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you create your own back rest pillow:

Materials:

- Fabric of your choice (1/2 yard or more depending on the size of your pillow)

- Coordinating thread

- Polyester fiber fill or foam for stuffing

- Sewing machine or needle and thread

- Fabric scissors

- Measuring tape

- Pins

- Iron

- Zipper or buttons for closure (optional)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Fabric:

- Wash, dry, and iron the fabric to remove any wrinkles and ensure it's smooth.

2. Cut the Fabric:

- Cut two pieces of fabric that are the same size for the front and back of the pillow. The size of the pieces will depend on your desired pillow size. For example, two pieces measuring 16 x 24 inches will make a standard-sized back rest pillow.

3. Add Hem Allowance:

- Add a 1-inch seam allowance around all sides of both fabric pieces. This will allow you to sew the seams and create a clean finish.

4. Hem the Edges:

- Fold the edges of the fabric 1 inch inward and iron them flat. Then, fold the edges again and stitch them in place to create a hem.

5. Add Closure (optional):

- If you want a removable cover for your pillow, you can add a zipper or buttons to one side. Leave an opening at one end of the pillow and insert the zipper or sew on buttons.

6. Sew the Sides:

- With right sides together, pin the two fabric pieces together along three sides, leaving one side open for stuffing.

7. Stitch the Sides:

- Using a 1/2-inch seam allowance, stitch the three sides of the pillow together, backstitching at the beginning and end of each seam to secure them.

8. Turn the Pillow Right Side Out:

- Carefully turn the pillow cover right side out through the opening. Use a blunt object like a point turner or the end of a chopstick to push out the corners and ensure the pillow is fully turned.

9. Stuff the Pillow:

- Stuff the pillow with polyester fiber fill or foam until it reaches your desired firmness.

10. Close the Opening:

- If you didn't add a zipper, sew the remaining side of the pillow shut using a ladder stitch or slip stitch.

11. Finishing Touches:

- Iron the pillow to remove any wrinkles and give it a neat appearance.

12. Enjoy your Back Rest Pillow:

- Place your back rest pillow in your desired chair or space and enjoy the comfort and support it provides.

Tips:

- Choose a fabric that is durable and comfortable for your back.

- If you're using a heavy fabric, consider using a walking foot or roller foot on your sewing machine to prevent puckering.

- Be sure to stuff the pillow evenly to distribute the weight and provide consistent support.

Your DIY back rest pillow is ready to add coziness and comfort to your relaxation time. This project is also a great way to personalize your home decor and create a unique accent piece.
