Futon Cover Tips

Futons serve two purposes, providing a couch during the day and a bed at night. Using a futon also lets you change the look of your room, just by using a slipcover or cover. The cover wraps around the futon and the attached zipper keeps it firmly in place. Futon covers come in a wide range of styles and colors that fit nearly any type of home décor. A few tips will help you find the right futon cover for your space.
  1. Use the Right Type

    • Futon covers come in multiple types, including waterproof. The cover slips onto the futon cushion and the zipper slides along three sides. The zipper remains out of sight when using the cover. The cover repels water; when you need to clean it, just unzip the cover and toss it in your washing machine. The waterproof cover protects the inside of the futon from bacteria and also protects against bed bugs. This also helps with those suffering from dust allergies. Microfiber or microsuede futon covers provide another option. These futon covers are softer than the waterproof covers and fairly easy to clean. Spot treat minor stains with a household fabric cleaner or wash in the washer.

    Sizing is Everything

    • Futon covers aren't created equally, so it's important that you find one that fits your futon. The cover should act as a second skin on top of the existing futon, without any gaps. If you have to pull on the cover to make it fit, then it's likely too small. On the other hand, if the cover pulls away from the futon, then it's too large. Extra-large covers fit mattresses that are thicker or oversized, while regular futon covers are meant for the thinner mattresses. Consider wrapping the futon mattress in quilt batting or a foam mattress before using the futon cover, which creates a thicker cushion.

    Make Your Own

    • The futon mattress becomes thin and crushed from regular use, making it difficult to find a cover that fits. In this scenario, you can make your own cover from two double or full size sheets. For larger mattresses, use two queen size sheets. Remove the futon from the frame, wrap the sheets around the top and bottom and stitch along the sides. For a more professional look, turn the sheets inside out and stitch along three sides. Turn the sheets right side out, slide onto the futon and stitch along the last edge.
