Sofabed Guide

A sofabed is an extremely functional piece of furniture that is available in many styles and colors that can complement any living room decor. It can be useful for guests to both sit and sleep on or for sleepovers for your kids. It is a popular choice for smaller spaces that may not have a guest bedroom. It is also sustainable, as green living promotes multipurpose pieces so fewer pieces must be bought to complete your home.
  1. Mechanism

    • Sofabeds are available in two main categories. The traditional ones require the removal of the cushions and a full bed folds out from under the seat. The more modern ones flatten from an upright sofa into a bed as a contained unit. There are variations between the two options, but they work in a similar manner to one of the two. When purchasing a sofabed, ensure you understand the mechanism and practice how the piece works both ways. The sales associate should show you how it transforms into a bed, then how it returns to a sofa. A solid understanding of this process will be required for use, but also if any repair is ever necessary.

    Comfort

    • The sofabed must be comfortable both as a sofa and as a bed. The heavier models may look more traditional, but often contain a spring-form mattress, which is more supportive than foam. A foam mattress is often the base for modern sofabeds. A slatted bed base is also an extra means of comfort for guests sleeping over. When purchasing a sofabed, ensure you lay on it to feel whether it is comfortable.

    Practicality and Fit

    • Sofabeds come in a variety of shapes and sizes. There are sectional sofas that include a sofabed portion with additional storage. There are models that follow the futon look and simply flatten down. There are armless models and ones with high and low backs. Measure the space available for the sofabed and ensure the model chosen will fit easily. Also, sofabeds with the contained bed can be extremely heavy due to the spring-form mattress and mechanisms inside. If you are planning to place one in your home on a higher floor or in awkward space, prepare the route in advance.

    Care and Maintenance

    • Sofabeds can experience a high degree of wear and tear, whether there are many guests using it regularly or if the sofa is a favorite place to sit in the living room. A removable slipcover may be useful in this scenario, as it can be washed and will maintain the fresh look of the piece. In addition, in terms of repairs, maintain the warranty if applicable and locate a reliable business in case repairs are needed to the mechanism. These simple steps can extend the life of the sofabed indefinitely.
