How to Create Bifold Doors for a Cabinet

Bifold doors are most common on closets. They often are designed in such a way that the inside edge of the innermost panels are secured to a track, and the doors run along that track when they are opened. Bifold cabinet doors are generally simpler in design, using no hardware beside hinges. This allows them to swing freely and open wider than closet bifolds, giving them all the benefits and none of the drawbacks of both single-piece and bifold doors.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the cabinet's entire front, from outer edge to outer edge, as well as the desired height of the door.

    • 2

Cut four boards of equal dimensions, each one-fourth the width of the cabinet and as tall as the height previously measured. Decorate these panels as desired.

    • 3

Lay the four panels side-by-side, numbering them 1 through 4 from left to right. Attach panel 1 to panel 2 with two hinges -- one hinge placed near the upper edge and one near the lower edge on their undersides. Do the same with panels 3 and 4.

    • 4

Hold a wooden knob against the front of panel 2, and secure it with a screw driven through from the backside of the panel. Do the same with panel 3.

    • 5

Hold panels 1 and 2 against the aperture of the cabinet, lining them up in their final position with the left edge of panel 1 flush with the left side of the cabinet. Secure panel 1 to the cabinet with a pair of hinges -- one near the upper edge of the panel and one near the lower edge, connecting the left edge to the cabinet's side. Do the same, mirrored, with panels 3 and 4 to complete the installation of the cabinet's bifold doors.
