Sawing Off the Metal Legs on Kitchen Stools

Don't despair if your new set of kitchen stools is too tall for the kitchen table. With a few tools, you can reduce them to a comfortable height. Although, outside of a metal-works workshop, metal might seem like a difficult material to cut, it's relatively easy when you use the appropriate set of tools, including a hacksaw. Take the measurements carefully before you cut, however, to avoid mistakes.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Scrap wood, 2-inch by 4-inch
  • Masking tape
  • Pencil
  • Hacksaw
  • Sandpaper, 60-grit
  • Rubber feet

Instructions

    • 1

Place the stool next to the table. Measure from the top of counter down to the area you'd be comfortable sitting on the stool.

    • 2

Cut a piece of scrap 2-by-4-inch wood to the measurement taken in step 1. Tape a pencil to one end of the wood. This makeshift tool is useful for marking the point at which to cut off the excess metal and for drawing an accurate line on each leg for uniform cutting.

    • 3

Stand the free end of the wood on the floor beside one leg of a kitchen stool. Ensure that the tip of the pencil rests against the leg. Move the wood around the leg to draw a line. Repeat this step for the remaining legs.

    • 4

Lay the stool on one side on a workbench or flat surface. Cut the excess off each leg with a hacksaw. Cut along the lower edge of each mark.

    • 5

Sand the bottom of the legs with sandpaper until smooth. Stand the stool on the workbench or table and examine it for balance. If the stool tilts in any direction, then one leg is longer than the others. Use the direction of the tilt to identify the longer leg. Sand the bottom of this leg until it is the same length as the remaining three.

    • 6

Insert rubber feet onto the bottom of each leg to protect the floor from scratches. Repeat the previous steps for the remaining kitchen stools.
