DIY Curved Corner Nook

Incorporating a curved, diner-style nook into a corner of your kitchen is a space-saving solution in a small home. By building it yourself, a built-in dining area or breakfast nook makes a frugal addition to your kitchen. With a cushioned bench that fits neatly around the curve of your round or oval table, you can also repurpose your existing furniture to fit the new decor.

Instructions

  1. Build the Bench

    • 1

Place the table all the way into the corner. Pull it out 18 inches from the wall. Slide a chair behind the table and sit down to check for fit. Pull the table out a little more until you can comfortably sit, enter and exit from behind the table.

    • 2

Measure the space behind the table, all the way to the front edge of the chair. This is the depth of your bench. Also measure the length and width of the nook to determine the size of the bench.

    • 3

Place a sheet of plywood on the floor. Turn the table upside down onto the plywood. Center the table onto the length of the plywood. Adjust the table until the distance between the edge of the plywood and the table matches the depth of the bench. Draw the outline of the table onto the plywood with a pencil. Remove the table.

    • 4

Cut the plywood along the pencil line with a jigsaw. Use the cut plywood as a template by laying it over the second sheet of plywood. Mark the curve and cut it with the jigsaw to match.

    • 5

Draw a bead of construction glue around the edges and in a large X across the first piece of plywood. Place the second sheet of plywood over the first, aligning the edges. Press down firmly.

    • 6

Predrill screw holes every 6 inches around the perimeter of the plywood. Screw the two sheets of plywood together with deck screws. Draw a line down the center of the plywood and add screws every 6 inches along that line.

    • 7

Install a flat-mounting plate 4 inches in from each corner of the plywood. Add two more mounting plates equidistant along the curve of the plywood. Also add a mounting plate centered on each side along the back of the bench.

    Upholster the Bench

    • 8

Roll out the quilt batting on a flat surface in the general shape of the bench. Piece together as needed, using fabric tape to hold the batting together.

    • 9

Place the plywood on top of the batting with the mounting plates facing upward. Wrap the batting over the edges of the bench and staple in place 2 inches in from the plywood's edges. Trim the excess batting with scissors.

    • 10

Place the foam next to the bench. Move the bench onto the foam and trace around the edges of the plywood. Remove the bench and cut out the foam with an electric carving knife or utility knife.

    • 11

Screw the chair legs onto the mounting plates on the bottom of the bench. Turn the bench over onto the legs.

    • 12

Place the foam on top of the bench, aligning the edges carefully. Lay the cushion fabric over the foam, allowing it to hang 3 inches past the bottom of the bench. Trim the excess fabric.

    • 13

Tack the fabric in place on the bottom of the bench in the corners. Turn the bench over.

    • 14

Fold the fabric over 1 inch. Staple it in place every 2 inches along the perimeter of the bench. Remove and replace the initial staples that held the foam and fabric in place when you turned the bench over. Pull the fabric gently along the front curve of the bench, tucking, folding and stapling to make a clean edge.

    • 15

Turn the bench back onto its legs and tuck it snugly into the corner of the room.

    • 16

Cut two 15-by-15-inch squares from the leftover plywood. Place one on each corner wall, just above the bench cushions. Predrill a hole in the four corners of each plywood square and screw to the wall.

    • 17

Cut a 15-by-18-inch plywood rectangle. Predrill a screw hole into each corner. Screw to the outer corners of the two plywood squares, spanning the space. Cut a 12-by-12-by-18-inch triangle to finish the corner backrest. Run a bead of glue along the top of the installed plywood and place the triangle on top to make a shelf.

    • 18

Cut 16-by-16-inch square cushions out of the leftover foam. Wrap each cushion in fabric as if it were a gift box. Hand sew the edges of the fabric together on the back side of the cushions.

    • 19

Place the square cushions along the wall to make a back for the bench. Push the table into place in front of the bench to complete the corner nook. Add dining chairs to the front of the nook if desired.
