Instructions for a 1992 Simmons Crib

Cribs come in many different styles. The 1992 Simmons crib is a double drop-side style. Since it is one of the few places your baby will be left alone, it is very important to find a style that is comfortable for your child and provides convenient access for you. Just as important is making sure your crib is assembled correctly to prevent serious injury. Instruction manuals can be obtained by contacting the customer service department of your crib's manufacturer.

Lay all of your pieces out, and group similar pieces together so they are easier to find. You should have two crib ends each with threaded sleeves, post brackets, stabilizing bar brackets, and lower post brackets already installed. You should also have two drop-sides, two stabilizing bars with catch levers, one crib spring with spring clip, four drop-side rods, four gate shoes and four casters. For hardware you should have four support handles, eight 5/8-inch metal screws, four hexagon lock washer head bolts and eight springs--four of each size.

Hold the stabilizing bar with the catch lever down and toward the inside of the crib. The keyhole slots will fit around the screws on the metal bracket attached to the corner posts. Once the screws are aligned with the small part of the keyhole, tighten the screws. Attach the second stabilizing bar in the same manner and repeat the process for the opposite end of the crib.

Insert the end of the support handles into the spring clips at each end of crib spring. You should be able to see the notched end of the handle through the clip. Place the crib spring into the crib and set each support handle on the brown hook on each corner post. Make sure you have placed the handles on hooks at the same level. The crib spring creates the platform for the mattress so it should be level.

Use the metal screws to attach two gate shoes on each of the drop-sides. The gate shoes are angular metal brackets with two holes and a raised central lip. You will find four predrilled holes on each of the bottom rails of the drop-side for this purpose. Make sure the screws are tight.

Install the drop-side rod. According to the manufacturer's instructions, the drop-side rod must be inserted in the following sequence: "Top rail of drop-side, post bracket hole, small end of short conical spring, bottom rail of drop-side, long bumper spring, lower post bracket." Then use the hexagon head bolt to secure the drop-side rod into the threaded sleeve on the upper portion of each corner post. Repeat this process for each of the remaining three rods.

If you wish to install the casters, you will find holes on the bottom of each of the four posts. Simply push the caster peg into the hole until it snaps. The caster should rotate freely.
