What Types of Cribs Are There?

The crib is a basic component of a nursery, one that will probably be used for several years. With all the types of cribs that are available, the one you choose can complement almost any nursery design. One of the things to consider when choosing a crib is the overall design. Cribs with simple lines are recommended, as scrollwork or intricate detailing can catch on a baby's clothes and cause him harm.
  1. Standard

    • This is the most common type of crib. As of June 2010, drop-side cribs were banned for safety reasons, so all cribs now have fixed sides. When comparing cribs, check to see if there are exposed brads or glue where the slats are connected. See how the sides are connected to the ends, and observe the overall design and build of the crib. Essentially, you are looking for the cleanest and safest construction possible.

    Convertible

    • Convertible cribs offer a bit more longevity than standard cribs. These cribs often have multiple mattress height adjustments. These adjustments allow the child to use the crib longer as she grows. Another feature that is attractive is that many of these cribs can also convert into toddler beds when the child is ready for that step. Some cribs take it a step further and convert into a standard twin or full-size bed that can accommodate older children and teens.

    Canopy

    • This crib style features a canopy top above the crib. The canopy may be a standard canopy that covers a frame, or it may have side panels that can enclose the crib. Since this style does offer more design elements, look closely at the types of materials being chosen for the canopy or side panels. Be sure to choose something that the baby will not be able to get his fingers caught in. Once safety has been established, the material for the canopy can be a beautiful addition to the overall decor of the room.

    Round

    • Round cribs are the latest trend. This style also comes with the option of having a canopy and typically measures around 45 inches in diameter. The size and shape can also be helpful to parents who are dealing with an odd-sized room for a nursery. Unlike most other cribs, round cribs often come with a theme within their design. For instance, there are butterfly, princess, sports, and star-themed cribs, in addition to basic wood tones or painted surfaces. These cribs do not convert to other types of beds.
