The Best Wall Storage for Kids

Storage in a kid's room should be functional enough to store what is needed, but sturdy enough that it will not be tipped over by a child playing. Teaching children from a young age to keep their rooms clean can be a challenge. However, if they are provided with the necessary tools, keeping their rooms clean can be a snap. The best storage for a child's room is one that will work both now and later.
  1. Bins

    • The simplest storage solution for a child's room is storage bins. They are available in a wide range of colors, shapes and sizes. They can be mounted permanently to the wall by installing a 2-inch by 4-inch board on the wall and screwing through the lip of the bin into the 2-inch by 4-inch board. Another option is to install 1-inch by 1-inch "arms" that stick straight out from the wall. Simple slide the bin in between the arms so the lip of the bin is held by the arms. Removing these in the future would only require some Spackle and wall paint to restore the wall.

    Shelves

    • Shelving is the most versatile of the storage solutions. Shelves can be installed to specific dimensions and created just for that room. Closet system shelving can be used along the walls to create adjustable storage. Often these are installed with pieces that run vertically along the wall at certain intervals. The shelves are then attached to these pieces and are readily changed as needed. Other options for shelving include creating low-hung shelving to hold baskets, or creating units that are independent of one another, such as square boxes. These units can then be stacked together to make one large piece.

    Bookcases

    • As a child gets older, his collection of books will no doubt grow with him. Bookcases are an excellent way to corral clutter by offering space to store things without covering them up. Bookcases are functional, and as your child matures, the bookcase will still be able to accommodate his changing interests. Bookcases hold more than just books and are available in painted colors, wood tone or laminate to suit any decor. Make sure to attach bookcases directly to the wall or add a strap from the top of the shelf to the wall so they will not tip over.

    Wall Unit

    • A wall unit is a piece that is either multiple pieces attached to create one large unit, or one very large piece of furniture. Wall units can contain shelves, drawers, cabinets or a mixture of all three. When considering a wall unit, look for ones with a study desk or a surface large enough for a computer. Your child may not need it now, but as he grows, it can be a drawing desk and then a homework area. These types of units are still usable after your child has gone to college, and can be easily transformed into a home office space.
