How to Make an L-Shaped Desk out of Two

L-shaped desks provide more work space than a standard desk and enable you to work more effectively. You can set up separate work spaces for different tasks. Instead of purchasing an L-shaped desk you can make one yourself as a DIY project. Use two rectangular desks placed perpendicular to each other. Cover the desks with melamine panels to create an L-shaped work surface on top of the desks. Melamine is a smooth manufactured building material that comes in prefabricated panels that are ideal for furniture surfaces and shelving.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 rectangular desks, 32 inches wide, 60 inches long
  • 2 melamine panels, 1-by-32-by-60-inch
  • 2 metal braces, with screws
  • Screw gun
  • 8 adhesive-backed rubber nonslip pads

Instructions

    • 1

Place the two rectangular desks perpendicular to each other so that the seating sides are on the inside of the “L” shape that is formed. The 32-inch end of one desk should butt up against the 60-inch side of the other desk on the end. This will create a short 28-inch work space and a long 60-inch work space on the inside of the "L" shape.

    • 2

Lay one 1-by-32-by-60-inch panel flat on each desk surface so that the edges of the desk surface and the panels are flush.

    • 3

Position one metal brace 6 inches in from each edge of the melamine panels along the seam where they join together. Drive the screws that were included with the braces through the mounting holes in the braces into the surface of the panels with a screw gun.

    • 4

Place an adhesive-backed rubber nonslip pad in each of the four corners of the two panels. The nonslip pads will allow the melamine panel work surface to “float” in place on top of the original desk tops.

    • 5

Turn the melamine panels over and align the outside edges of the panels with the edges of the desk surface. The melamine will create a smooth, clean and renewed desk surface for the L-shaped desk unit.
