How to Make a Paper Stand at Home

When you're working on a computer, or reading a piece of paper off of a desk, you can actually cause yourself some harm. Back and neck strain are dangers, especially when trying to copy from a book or paper onto a computer screen. However, it's really easy to either make or purchase a page stand or book holder for yourself. The downside to trying to buy one, is that paper holders are fairly difficult to find.

Things You'll Need

  • Particleboard Clipboard

  • Saw

  • Power drill and bits

Instructions

  1. Book Holder

    • 1

From the 8 feet of 11/2-by-3/4-inch wood, cut two 18-inch pieces, two 9-inch pieces, two 51/2-inch pieces at a 45-degree angle and one 3-inch piece. Carefully mark each piece.

    • 2

Lay one of the two 18-inch pieces horizontally on top of one of two 9-inch pieces in a perpendicular fashion. With a T-square or paper, adjust them to make a 90-degree angle. Glue and screw the pieces at the corner. Repeat on the other side with the remaining vertical piece to form a "U" shape.

    • 3

Flip the U-frame over. Glue and screw the remaining horizontal piece to form a rectangle, using your 90-degree piece to adjust the angle.

    • 4

Draw a center mark on the bottom piece, and attach the 3-inch spine holder to the center, so it points upward into the center of the rectangle. If you have questions about how the piece should look, see References.

    • 5

Flip the holder over, then lift it from the top so you can rest it on the legs. They should end up between where the horizontal and vertical pieces meet. Glue and screw them into place them there. See the References for more on the final product.

    Page Holder

    • 6

Measure the angle you want the holder to stand at onto a piece of wood. Place the clipboard upright on the table, then tilt it backward until it reaches your desired angle—between 45 and 60 degrees is a good angle. Place a piece of wood against this, and trace the angle onto the wood. The piece you've just marked will form one leg.

    • 7

Cut the leg out of the wood.

    • 8

Make a second leg using the first one as a template. Place the cutoff on top of the first leg and trace the piece onto it.

    • 9

Dry-fit the clipboard against the two legs and mark two or three points per leg where the clipboard meets the legs.

    • 10

Use the sandpaper to rough up the back of the clipboard about where the legs will be attached. This will make it easier to glue the legs to the board.

    • 11

Select a bit no thicker than your nails and drill through the marks you made on the clipboard.

    • 12

Glue, then nail the legs onto the back of the clipboard. Leave the glue to dry overnight.
