How to Make Sofa Supports

Sitting down on your sofa and sinking half way to the floor is never a pleasant experience. This furniture piece may be the focal point of the room, so having one that functions optimally is important. Instead of purchasing an expensive new sofa, save your existing one by making your own sofa supports to restore firmness.

Instructions

  1. Rope Support

    • 1

Remove the cushions from the sofa and put them aside. Locate the back part of the sofa’s frame, across the back of the seat cushion area. Screw a span of small eyehooks across this piece of wood. Space them evenly throughout, leaving a space of about 6 inches between each one.

    • 2

Locate the front part of the sofa’s frame, across the very front part of the seat cushion area. Screw eyehooks in at the same interval as the ones on the back part of the frame.

    • 3

Thread a thin piece of nylon rope through the front, left eyehook and knot it at the end. Thread it through the opposite back eyehook and then up through the next front eyehook. Repeat this weaving pattern until you reach the last eyehook on the right side of the sofa.

    • 4

Pull the rope tight and knot it to finish the sofa support. Replace all the cushions.

    Plywood Support

    • 5

Remove the cushions and measure the sofa’s length. Measure from the front of the sofa’s seat cushion area to the back as well. Remember the numbers for reference.

    • 6

Draw the outline of your sofa’s seat area based on the measurements onto a piece of plywood.

    • 7

Cut out the plywood outline with a scroll saw. Sand down the rough edges.

    • 8

Slide the plywood piece onto the sofa’s seat cushion surface to restore firmness. Replace the cushions.
