How to Build a Wood Sofa

Position two 24-inch two-by-four boards parallel to each other with a large surface faced downward. Space the two boards 17 inches apart. Lower two more identical boards on top of these, perpendicular to them and making a square frame that is 24 inches on a side. Drill three 2 1/2-inch wood screws into each corner using a drill, finishing the leg frame. Repeat to build a total of three leg frames.

Arrange three leg frames parallel to each other, about a foot and a half apart and standing upright on the working surface. Suspend six 48-inch two-by-four boards across these leg frames, spacing them evenly front to back and side to side. Drill two holes down through each of these 48-inch boards, which are the seat boards, and into each leg frame for a total of 36 holes. Drill 2 1/2-inch wood screws into each hole to connect the sofa together.

Position a 48-inch two-by-four board behind each leg frame, standing vertically with its large surface pressing against the leg frame and rear seat board. Consider these boards the backrest supports. Drill six holes through the rear of the backrest supports and into the leg frame and rear seat board. Attach them in place with 2 1/2-inch wood screws.

Suspend six 48-inch two-by-four boards across the backrest supports, spacing them evenly. Drill two holes through each board, which are the backrest boards, and into each backrest support. Screw 2 1/2-inch wood screws into each hole to attach the backrest.
