Making a Couch

Making a couch is not as difficult as it may sound, especially if you have some experience with woodworking and sewing. Purchase the foam pre-cut so that you don't have to worry about using an electric knife or making a measuring error with the foam. When you build your own couch, you can choose its exact dimensions, so that it can work in whatever size space you have. Choose a durable fabric, such as heavy canvas or vinyl, to cover the frame and foam.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the plywood into five pieces. One piece should measure 36 inches by 84 inches, one should measure 20 inches by 84 inches, one should measure 24 inches by 82 inches and two should measure 26 inches by 36 inches.

    • 2

Stand the 36-by-84-inch piece of plywood upright. This piece will form the back of the couch. Place a line of glue along one long edge of each 26-by-36-inch piece and press against the ends of the back piece. Secure with the 1 5/8-inch screws, inserted through the back of the back piece and spaced about 6 inches apart.

    • 3

Apply glue to the two short sides and one long side of the 24-by-82-inch piece of plywood and slide it inside the three-sided frame you just built. You want the 24-by-82-inch piece to be about 18 inches from the ground. Secure it with screws through the back and side pieces, spaced about 6 inches apart.

    • 4

Place the 20-by-84-inch piece of plywood against the bottom open part of the frame. Its ends should be flush with the outside of the side pieces. Apply a line of glue to its two short sides and attach it to the middle and side pieces with the screws.

    • 5

Drape the batting all over the outside of the plywood box you just built. Cover the batting with the fabric. Pull the fabric taut and staple it in place on the underside of the frame and along the seat.

    • 6

Cut a piece of fabric that measures 177 inches long by 61 inches wide; stitch on an extra 2-inch piece along one side to get the width needed. Fold the fabric lengthwise, with the right sides together, and sew together along three sides, leaving the fourth side open.

    • 7

Turn the fabric right side out and slide the 82-inch-by-24-inch cushion into it. This will be the seat of the couch. Hand-sew the fourth side closed and place on the couch.

    • 8

Repeat, cutting fabric that is twice the length and width of the other cushions, plus 1 inch, and twice the depth plus 1 inch. Cut two pieces that are 49 inches by 37 inches for the side cushions and one piece that is 153 inches by 37 inches for the back cushion. Fold in half, right sides together, and sew along three edges, then turn right-side-out, slide the cushions in and hand-sew the openings closed.

    • 9

Place the long cushion along the back of the couch and the two side cushions against the arms of the couch.
