Remove any objects or obstructions in the near vicinity of the couch to give you more working room. Take off the top cushions, pillows and any upholstery from the couch. Put them in a safe place.
Turn the couch upside down. Get a friend to help you if the couch is heavy. If the couch has legs, use a screwdriver to unscrew them from the body of the couch. Set the legs aside.
Use a mat knife to cut off the upholstery. Cut across the seam of the upholstery and pull up with your free hand to free the upholstery fabric. Cut off and remove any padding with the mat knife. If you wish to reuse the upholstery for a later project, break the stitching along the seam with a seam-ripping tool to keep the fabric intact.
Check the frame of the sofa to determine the location of any connectors, springs or hinges. Use pliers or a screwdriver to unscrew or unfasten these components.
Pull apart the sofa pieces. Remove the pieces or organize them as needed for other projects.
