Barstools have evolved from their smaller cousins of ancient times -- stools. The history of stools goes back to ancient China and Egypt. Ancient Chinese built their houses around courtyards, and stools were an essential part of garden furniture. Later they were used indoors as well -- wood stools for the house and stone/porcelain stools for gardens. The importance of stools in ancient Egypt was enormous. Many stools were found in tombs, and Egyptian hieroglyph for the letter "p" means stool. Stools got longer legs (and backrests, in some cases) in modern times, thus becoming barstools.
The height of a standard barstool is 24 to 30 inches (some types are adjustable). They have one or four legs. Design of the seat varies in shape (most commonly oval) and materials. In case of wood barstools, the seat is usually wooden, while leather and cloth seats are more common in the case of metal barstools. Backrests, armrests and padding are additional; they depend solely on design.
Wood barstools are rustic. They are sensitive to weather conditions; therefore, they are fit for indoor use. The term "wood" usually refers to solid wood: oak, cherry, maple, hickory and walnut. Each wood has its natural color and grain, which is usually the crucial factor when choosing between wood bar stools. Usual weight is from 25 to 30 lbs., much less than the weight of metal barstools.
Metal barstools usually have a futuristic design. They are fit for both indoor and outdoor use and are a good choice for offices. They are less sensitive to weather conditions and will not crack easily. The term "metal" usually refers to steel, chrome or aluminum. Metal barstools are heavy (usually over 40 lbs.). Most swivel stools are this type. The three most common types of metal barstools are 360-degree swivel, half swivel and memory swivel stools.
Combined barstools incorporate the best features of both materials. Wood/metal barstools weigh less than common metal barstools and are less sensitive to weather conditions than common wood barstools. Much more space is available for experimental designs and greater variety in seat materials. This type is fit for those who like a mixture of a rustic and contemporary look.
