How to Grease Outdoor Rocking Chairs

Rocking chairs have a charm that adds personality to any space, whether indoors or outdoors. From a modern sleek black metal rocker to a traditional wicker chair, outdoor rocking chairs add the final finish to any patio or porch. Outdoor rocking chairs come in wicker, metal, recycled plastic, resin or wood and are sturdier than indoor ones. Nevertheless, they still need some level of maintenance, particularly gliders. Instructions

  1. Cleaning

    • 1

Protect the floor of the work area with tarp or thick layer of newspaper.

    • 2

Position the rocker on its side. This is best done by two people.

    • 3
Baby wipes are safe and quick for cleaning rocking chairs.

Make a spraying solution of 1 gallon of water, one-half cup vinegar and one-eighth cup of mild detergent; this solution can be used for all types of rockers on all its parts. Alternatively, use baby wipes for wood, plastic and resin rockers. Baby wipes contain disinfectant and moisturizers that are good for wood.

Glider rockers have mechanisms that need special attention.

Spray the water solution on the glider mechanism of the rocker. Pay attention to its tracks, hinges and joints. Let the solution stand for a few minutes to loosen any hard debris then brush away.

    • 5

Dry thoroughly with a cloth or by air-drying.

    Lubricating

    • 6
Water-displacement lubricant for cars is an excellent greasing agent for rocking chairs.

Spray water-displacement lubricant on the glider mechanism (if any), screws and joints of the rocking chair. Let seep for a few minutes.

    • 7
Avoid squeaks by tightening all screws after lubricating.

Tighten all screws and hinges that you can find.

    • 8

Lubricate and condition wooden parts with furniture polish. Use olive oil for wicker, especially if it is painted.

    • 9

Move the rocking chair to its upright position. Slide the glider back and forth to work the lubricant further into the glider’s nooks and crannies. Let dry.

    • 10
Waterproofing is best done in good weather to set properly.

Apply a coat of waterproof sealant to further protect the rocking chair and minimize the need for constant maintenance. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Let the first coat dry, then follow with another.
