The Standard Size of a Support Pillow

Support pillows are used to provide additional support for a specific section of the body. Various types of support pillows are available in many sizes and shapes. Support pillows can be used to support sore muscles, injured parts of the body or to simply get better support and comfort for a good night's sleep. A good support pillow provides the necessary support to suit the user's needs.
  1. Standard Size

    • The standard size of a pillow in the United States is 20 inches by 26 inches. This is the most common pillow size, and many neck support pillows are also this standard size. A wide variety of support pillows are made, but their sizes are not standardized. They include infant support pillows or nursing pillows, neck rolls, anti-snore pillows, chiropractic pillows and kid's neck pillows.

    Travel Pillows

    • Travel pillows provide neck support and comfort while traveling. They measure 12 by 16 inches and can be conveniently packed into a suitcase. These small pillows provide the needed neck support during long car rides or airplane rides. Some travel pillows are specifically designed to provide comfort and support for the lower back and are commonly used in vehicles and desk chairs.

    Body Pillow

    • Body pillows are the largest on the market measuring up to 75 by 15 inches. Body pillows are designed to provide support for the whole body, and their size is intended to equal the average size of an adult. They are used along one side of the bed. Body pillows may also be found in smaller sizes for children.

    Other Specialty Pillows

    • Every person has different sleep needs, and while good standard pillows may be adequate for many people, they will not be sufficient for others. Contour or therapeutic body pillows are designed to provide extra support to the head and neck by conforming to the shape of the body, and the level of support is adjusted according to the body of the user. Hypoallergenic pillows are designed for people suffering from allergies; they effectively control allergens such as dust for easier breathing. In some cases, it may be appropriate to use more than one kind of support pillow.
