Canopy Covered Bed Ideas for a Boy's Room

If you think canopy covered beds are just for girls’ rooms, think again. Whether you purchase a bed with a canopy frame or opt for a do-it-yourself version, canopy beds are suitable for boys’ rooms, too. Depending on the bed style and canopy covering you choose, you can even turn bedtime into an adventure.
  1. Log Bed

    • A log canopy bed works for outdoorsy boys of all ages. Dress the thick, rough-hewn logs with canopy curtains made from plaid or checked flannel for a lodge-like feel. Top the bed with a cozy patchwork quilt to complete the look.

If a log canopy bed isn’t in the budget, get a similar feel with a do-it-yourself bed canopy. Suspend straight, slender tree branches over the head and foot of the bed. Hang them from large hooks or ceiling-mounted curtain rod brackets. Drape a long length of fabric over the branches. If you can’t find suitable branches, faux-finish two thick dowels to look like tree bark.

    Tent or Teepee Bed

    • Sew a fabric top to fitted side panels to turn a boy’s campaign-style canopy bed into a tent or teepee frame. On campaign-style beds, the canopy frames are smaller than the mattress, which gives your tent or teepee a triangular look. Substitute flared, A-shaped fabric panels attached to a small, suspended hoop to copy the look with a regular bed.

For the tent look, use khaki-colored canvas or camouflage-patterned fabric, and include zip- or lace-up flaps. Grommets threaded with cord work well for lace-up versions. Get the teepee effect by using microfiber or imitation suede in a neutral color, and then add fringe around the top and along the teepee openings.

    Sports Fan Bed

    • For a sports fan, dress up a traditional wood or metal canopy bed by making a canopy valance out of team pennants. Get a similar look with a regular bed by suspending a rectangular metal frame from the ceiling, then attaching the pennants to the frame.

Pennants sometimes have pole pockets, grommets or ties along their tops. If the openings aren’t large enough to fit over the canopy rails, thread color-coordinated cording though the pennant tops, then tie the cord to the canopy frame. Stitch plain pennants together along their tops and add ties or a rod pocket made from upholstery webbing.

    Plumbing Pipe Bed

    • Build a boyish canopy bed from scratch out of plumbing pipes. Choose from copper, galvanized steel or black steel pipes, then connect the pieces using pipe fittings that match. Galvanized pipe works particularly well for the industrial look, especially if you pair it with canopy curtains made from window-screen mesh. For a softer look still suitable for a pipe bed, install oversized metal grommets along the tops of simple, flat-panel curtains and thread the grommets onto the pipes. Make a matching panel for the top of the canopy if you want a completely covered look.
