Most dormitory beds have extra-long twin mattresses. These mattresses are approximately 39 inches wide, just like a standard twin. However, instead of being 75 inches long, they are 80 inches long. This extra length accommodates taller students without taking up very much additional floor space. Because of the mattress size, dormitory beds require extra-long sheet sets to ensure that the fitted sheet is large enough. Standard twin-sized comforters usually work fine.
Most dormitory beds have either a basic wood or metal frame. The frame is designed to be durable and inexpensive, so it probably does not have a fancy finish that might get scratched. The bed frame generally has a metal grid attached to the frame with springs rather than a traditional box spring. This grid provides enough support for an extra long twin mattress and does not take up as much valuable under-bed space.
Dormitory beds often have an adjustable configuration to allow students the flexibility to arrange their rooms in several ways. Students can usually adjust the height at which the mattress sits to make more space under the bed for storage. A dorm room with two beds usually includes a set of pegs to allow students to safely stack the beds and convert them into a bunk bed. The bed might come with a ladder or just have wooden slats up the end to act as a ladder. Some schools also allow students to use lofting supplies to raise their beds to the height of a top bunk and put their desks or other furniture underneath.
Dormitory beds usually are designed for durability, not necessarily comfort. Mattresses are often coated in a waterproof material and are not very comfortable. People who will be sleeping on a dorm bed regularly can purchase mattress toppers to increase the comfort level. Egg crate foam toppers, memory foam toppers and down-filled toppers are a few options.
