DIY Padded Vibrating Headboards

In 1958, a company called Magic Fingers developed a coin-operated relaxation device that attached to beds in some hotel rooms. With the addition of a quarter, you could experience a 15 minute bed-jiggling massage. Although finding a hotel with its own vibrating bed is increasingly more difficult to find, you can create your own vibrating headboard for your home. Headboard construction requires little construction skills and the finished product is a gentle back massage you can experience while sitting up in bed.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of 56-by-30-by-3/4-inch plywood to create the base for the headboard using a circular saw. The height of the headboard is the 30-inch side and the width is the 56-inch side. Place the cut plywood down on your work surface.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of 56-by-30-by-1/2-inch upholstery foam using a serrated knife. If the roll of foam is not large enough to make a piece the required dimensions, cut several pieces to total 56-by-30 inches.

    • 3

Spray the surface of the plywood with spray adhesive. Apply a thin even coat to the entire surface. Center one piece of the upholstery foam on top of the plywood base and press it down against the spray adhesive.

    • 4

Place a sleep massager on the center of the upholstery foam. Pull the attaching straps to the side so they extend beyond the edge of the foam. If the sleep massager you choose does not have straps attached, just center the massager on the foam. Pull the control switch and power cord for the massager over the edge of the foam as well, letting it hang away from the foam. A sleep massager is a device, similar to the Magic Fingers. The device vibrates to shake the bed or in this case the headboard. You can find them online and in mattress stores, such as the Magic Fingers or Simmons Beautyrest Sleep Massager.

Spray the surface of the foam with a layer of spray adhesive. Center the second piece of foam on top of the first. Press it down.

    • 6

Cut a piece of fabric measuring 66-by-40 inches. Place the fabric face down on your work surface. Turn the foam covered base face down on the fabric. Pull the straps of the sleep massager around the edges of the plywood and secure them on the back of the plywood.

    • 7

Wrap the fabric around the edges of the foam and plywood. Start with the center of the fabric on each side and pull it snug. Staple the fabric to the plywood with a staple gun. Then, pull the fabric around the rest of the headboard and staple it in place. When stapling around the control switch and power cord for the massager, avoid putting staples through the wiring.

Measure down 2 inches from the top edge of the headboard and 2 inches in from the left side. Attach a wall mount bracket to the back of the headboard at this location using screws. Place the screws through the holes of the bracket. Measure down and in 2 inches on the right side and place a second bracket.

    • 9

Measure up 55 inches from the ground on the wall you want to mount the headboard. Attach a wall mount bracket at this location. Measure over 54 inches from the outer edge of the first wall bracket and hang a second.

    • 10

Lift the headboard to the wall and slide the wall mount brackets into place. Set the bed up as usual. Rest the control switch on a table or let it hang down. Plug in the sleep massager to sue.
